Any questions or new info are welcomed.
I have enjoyed reading about Whitaker Ridge and would like to learn more about it. I have heard stories growing up but it was like a big mystery as my dad, Jerry Whitaker, wasn't allowed to go there. His dad was Wade Mack Whitaker and his dad was John. As far as I know they lived in southern WV in McDowell county. I heard Wade was from the Big Creek area. Any information about this line of Whitakers would be appreciated. Thanks!
Eric, drop me an e-mail with some time frames. What years they were there. Ages, DOB and what have you. I have heard of a couple Jerimiah's and John's.
Your grandfather Wade Mack Whitaker and My Grandfather John Henry Whitaker were brothers. I have lots of information and id like to compare notes too. Send me an email email@example.com.
My dad is from war and went to big creek high school. My cousin still lives there.
Thank you Gary for the newspaper clips! I am searching my Dunford ancestry and have found that the Whitakers, Barnetts, Altizers, Dunfords, Christians and Davidsons are all connected! WOW! I appreciate the clips! Thanks again for sharing! Peggy.
Gary, I have a question about Thomas Whittaker and Mary Altizer. My mother was an Altizer, so would like to know Mary’s parents. And any children they may have had. Thanks
My mother’s grandfather was Jimmy B, father Bliss!
Sorry Gary, that should be Nannie Lou Altizer, not Mary.
Very interresting since i am a whitaker and more than likely related. My dad grew up in the same area.
What was your fathers name and when did he live in the area?
Gary, I remember stopping by to see Mertie and she would be sitting on the porch smoking her corn cob pipe! She was a sweet lady!!
Thanks so much for your comment. Mertie was quite a lady. Whitaker Ridge was and still is a beautiful and wild place.
I grew up on Whittaker Ridge and now I live on Greasy Creek..so we still go up there all the time...I love it here!!!

William Taft Harman was my father.
I don't know much about his siblings. Grandmother Nora was a
School teacher in her younger years.
My granny was Francis ( Fanny )Whitaker , and my great aunt was Elsie. My dad was named after Peery Brittain WhitakerThe rest I didnt know well.I was especially close to Aunt Elsie .She was very special to me and my brother. She was kind of tough on the outside but kind to us.
Elsie Jane Whitaker died in 1989; I do not believe she had any children. Peery Brittain Whitaker was a singer and banjo player. I have a picture of him with Alex Barnett that I will be putting on the website. Frances Catherine WHITAKER, died in 1969 and was married to Alex Barnett. Your dad was Peery Brittain Barnett, I do not know when he was born or died. I would guess around 1920. He married Hazel Alexander Johnson. They had at least 2 children who were; . Marvin Johnson Barnett and Michael Barnett. I assume you are one of the 2.
Hey,Thanks for the pic of grandpa and uncle peery.Elsie had no kids.My dad actually spelt his name Perry. He was born in 1918.He died in 2008.My mom was a JohnsTon.She is still with us at 92.I am Michael (Mike) Barnett.I have a lot of pictures of the families you might be interested in if I can figure out how to send them!
Mike, I would love the pics. You can scan them or bring them to CVS or somewhere similar. I will e-mail you some articles like Mertie's brother getting killed in a card game, Doc and an Altizer getting arrested for moonshining. I have lots of crazy stuff.
Hi Gary! I would appreciate a copy of any of the Whitaker,Dunford, Barnett, Altizer pictures! I am a granddaughter of Sam Dunford. My Aunt Bessie married Graham Whitaker. Raymond Whitaker & his wife Rose lived across the road from us in Yukon. If you have a pic of them that would be nice too. I really enjoy your site!! Thank you for sharing all this great info! I think I am related to almost everyone in Tazewell County! I look forward to hearing from you! Thanks again! Peggy.
Google linked me to this page, nice reading
Glad you came here. I have lots of info I hope to add when time allows.
Love what you're doing. Often thought of something similar myself as I lived on Whitaker Ridge for some time.
But just as an FYI: the picture you have labeled as "lots of Altizers" are actually of a family of Alleys. The mother was an Altizer, but they were from Montgomery Co. and probably never heard of Whitaker Ridge.
Also, I could probably make you a better map than the one you have on the front page; one identifying just where familys lived on Whitaker Ridge.... when people actually lived there.
Thanks so much for the info. I would love to sit down with you sometime, I have hundreds of pages of info that can be hard to figure exactly what it is after all these years.. I will delete the photo and anything you can help me out with will be more than welcomed. The info I have includes many of the families in the area.
Interesting to read of people you have heard of all your life by your parents, but never met. Wonders never cease
Congrats on your new site! Your family certainly has a rich history.
See you all soon,
Christine, Chris & Family

I wrote a short story about JErmiah. A made up one just to go in the family book.! Was Whitaker Ridge in Va and WVA? I have been to the WVA side. Actually I was there last week. Hopefully I can have the privilege to meet you! So are we kin?
Yes we are kin. Jeremiah's father (James S.) had a son Hiram who is my great grandfather. Also he had Dock Snead as a son as well who was Mertie's father. So yes you are related to many of the people mentioned on this site. Whitaker Ridge as far as I know ends at the West Virginia line. I am not sure and will double check that That is what made it such a great moonshining area.
We should setup a phone call. Much easier to communicate that way.
Gary, I would be delighted to talk to you! I would like to meet you as well!
I have been searching for so much on my family. My dad is getting older and doesn't remember much. I need to keep our heritage alive.
You are a prayer answered!
I TRIED TO FIND YOU BY CALLING 411! ARE YOU IN THE TAZEWELL AREA? MY NUMBER IS 540-818-4013

We got disconnected during out telephone conversation. My battery went out on me. I am sorry! I hope to talk to you again soon!
Melvin, I will give you call next week. I will try for Monday or Tuesday.

My family is traced back so far to Obed Whitaker. Does that name ring a bell to anyone ? He would have married Elisabeth Neel and they had son James and daughter Rachel.
My family roots go back to Obediah Whitaker, married Elizabether Neel, Had son James and daughter Rachel, Next generation Wiiliam Whitaker married Amanda Chase, had a son James William Whitaker, who married Jenny Parker, they had 3 children Emerson, James and Iris , James is my grandfather.
I didn't know about this feud, nor am I related. However, remind me not to tick you off when we're bowling.
Interesting family history.
Do not ever spill another pitcher of beer on me.

Gary. I loved reading your articles on the Altizers, Whitaker or Whittaker depending on who you ask. 9My mother (deceased) was Pauline H. D. Whittaker sister to Mrs. Shirley W. Puckett, daughters of Fannie and Hobert Whittaker of Whittaker Ridge. Terry Damron.
My grandmother was nora whitaker harman.
I would love to know about her relatives.
hiram whitaker was her father
I was recently at the Tazewell County va library. I happened across the Obits for Hiram Whitaker, your great grandfather. Somehow I forgot to capture the actually year of death from the Clinch Valley News, but it does have the day and month he died and says he was 76 years old. In 1940 census, living in his home was Bob Crockett 89 (born 1851) who was Hirams father-in-law. I am trying to help one of Bob's (Robert) family find his obits or death certificate. If you're still on this page and want to contact me, I'd be happy to send you what I have on him. Take care, Sheila
Raised and live in Bandy, at the foot of Whitakerridge, most of my family was raised on Whitakerridge. Alex Barnett was my grandfather.
